How Safe Are The NSAIDs?
Non-selective NSAIDs – non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs-have long been seen skeptically by many doctors. They suspect adverse effects of the drugs on alimentary canal, heart, and skin (in which case they relate it to serious reactions). The European Medicines Agency is examining the latest data of researches conducted to find out their effects on cardiovascular system.
The agency has in its last such examination in the year 2006 had concluded the overall balance between benefits and risks with the drugs to be positive, but it was not excluded at that time as well that there were slightly higher risks of thrombotic conditions like stroke and heart attack. The risk is more evident with high doses for longer duration of treatment. On the basis of these observations,it recommended a broader study to be funded by European Commission that could take into account the effects of the drugs under various epidemiological variables on digestive system and heart.
Now as there are a number of new studies published on the safety concerns with NSAIDs,the results of the above-recommended study are also available. There are clinical trials with their detailed data available now.It is timely to examine all the relevant studies and their results now, so as to update the guidelines on these drugs if needed.Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has been given the responsibility of performing this task.
Notably the NSAIDs have been quite popular drugs being used frequently against pain and inflammation. The drugs became popular decades ago when their superiority over the opioid analgesics was established. The final results of examination by the CHMP that is a part of the European Medicines Agency are being keenly awaited by the pharma sector throughout the globe. In case the guidelines are updated,it may affect the companies’ business engaged for years in production of these drug.
